Worried... But Hopeful

As a mother, I worry. Even when others around me say there's nothing much to be worried about.

This past Tuesday afternoon, Delaney had an appointment at the Heart and Vascular Institute to have a heart echo done. I was assured by the pediatrician (after the chest xray was done) that this was pretty much just to make sure nothing was hidden. (We're still trying to figure out her tachypnea - rapid breathing.) After playing phone tag yesterday, I finally was able to get the results... and they weren't as good as I had hoped.

Apparently Delaney has an ASD - Atrial Septal Defect. I won't go into details on what it is mainly because I don't understand the mechanics of it all. Needless to say, I am worried. I'm a mom. I'm a mom with a new baby and hormones that are out of control. Thankfully my pediatrician and my dear husband don't seem to be too worried. But the word "defect" in reference to my sweet baby's heart causes me to worry.

We are being referred to a pediatric cardiologist up at OHSU for further consultation. We'll find out more Monday.

Until then, I worry.

And I hold my baby.

And I kiss her.

And I pray.

Rachel- I'm not certain but I'm pretty sure that my sister Holly was born with the exact same thing. If it is, you should know that she had surgery when she was 4 and is now 40 yrs old. I'll check with her and have her come to your blog and let you know.

You have EVERY RIGHT to worry. You're a mom. Just know that you'll be in our prayers.

Hang in there...

Go ahead and worry, you are allowed. I do know several babies that have had this same condition and all turned out perfectly fine. That baby is so precious. I think she just needs more kisses :)

My prayers are with her and you!

Hey Rachel I would be feeling the same way. How could you not as a postpartum mother? Just hold on tight and don't stop praying. We will pray with you dear friend! Delaney is so cute and I just want to kiss those lovely juicy cheeks (I mean the ones on her face!)

I know this probably doesn't do too much to ease a mother's worry, but the cardiologists and everyone up at OHSU treated us so well when we were up there.

I can sympathize completely with how scary it is to get this kind of news. Delaney, you, and your family will be in our prayers. *big cyber hugs*

That is so scary to not know what is going on with your baby. Delaney looks like a fighter. Whatever it is, I bet she can take it! (In the meantime, we'll keep your family in our prayers.)

I'm so sorry Rachel. I was talking to Josh about this last night when I read it and he said it is very scary, but there is not reason to believe that she shouldn't come away from this just fine! I know it's hard, but know that she is SO strong and you guys will have so many prayers coming your way. Love you!!!

I know it's pointless to tell you to try not to worry. I haven't managed to not worry about much less worrisome issues myself. Just keep up your faith. Stay close to the Savior and rememer he is the master healer. So many prayers are with you and your sweet baby! We are wishing and hoping for the best!

Every mother prays to have that perfectly healthy baby, and when we think we don't get it, there is nothing anyone can say to make you feel better is there? It's ok to worry about your child, but we all pray that everything will work out for your new little angel. She is beautiful and congratz

Well, I know you're gonna worry no matter what we all say. It's a mother's right and it's just in the brain, so no need fussing about it.

So, with that understanding, may I remind you of all of us that you know that are majorly DEFECTIVE! I know you overlook these things-odd shapes of bodies, missing fingers, missing teeth, extra teeth, weird personalities, infertile, extra fertile, strange sense of humor...you know...weirdos! And, while you're gonna worry about Delany, just remember how often doctors label stuff and basically it's just normal "defined" by it's medical terms! Like I'm technically an amputee, but no one cares or worries about it. Most don't even notice. I know others have supernumeraries (sp?) which is nothing more than extra teeth..."defined" as abnormal, but not life threatening, nor unfixable. They would tell you if it was. Thank a lawyer for that! For all we know, we all have something in us that hasn't been running "normal" and just isn't defined by a doctor, yet! ;-P

So, laugh a little, distract yourself until the appointment, rely on the Spirit to comfort you, and Martin to reassure you, and the docs to keep you informed. And try not to worry TOO much. She'll be just fine. She's just so doggone cute! And get some sleep if you can. It'll help.

And keep talkin' to us. We love you all and will do everything we can to help, and comfort. That's what friends are for!

I have been without a computer for over a week. I have not been in touch with what is going on. I am sorry to hear about baby Delany. You need to turn it over to the Lord. He will help you up when you are down, and keep you going. He loves you and will not give you more than you can handle. You are have a strong Faith, family, friends, and husband and I am sure everything will be alright with your sweet baby girl. Keep on doing what you are doing, loving her, kissing her, praying for her, holding her, and hugging her. She is yours forever. I love you.
