Yes. You read that right. I said boobs. Get over it.
Several nights ago, I was having major breastfeeding issues - clogged ducts. For anyone who's ever nursed their babies and experienced circumstances similar to this know how incredibly painful it is. It got to the point (beyond tears) where I thought I may have to fore go the whole nursing thing and switch to formula. The thought killed me. She's only 2 months old and it broke my heart to think that quitting may be the end result.
So what did I do?
- Prayed.
- Emailed my girlfriends asking for advice.
- Took a SCORCHING HOT shower and massaged the lumps as best I could without passing out from pain.
- Took a pill of 600mg ibuprofen.
- Went to bed.
Thankfully, I woke up a new woman. Delaney and I are back on track and all is well in the breastfeeding department.
But I wanted to share the emails I received from my wonderfully caring friends. Rest assured I will not name names who these fabulous advice tips are from... but enjoy nonetheless. You gals are the best!!
--------------------------
Do you have more than one clog?
Frequent nursing in different positions
Massaging the sore area before and during nursing (painful, I know)
Warm wash cloths before nursing
Bite on a stick while nursing (totally kidding)
Make sure your bra fits okay
Don't go too long between feedings, especially right now
I'm so sorry. I know how much that hurts!
You can take tylenol to help before nursing/massaging.
I think that if it doesn't unclog it can become infected so you need to watch out for a temperature.
I get a clog every now and then. I hate them, they hurt so much. I told (my husband) that someone needs to invent boobie drano. :)
Good luck Rach!

Motrin will thin the fluid in the tissue. Not usually recommended while nursing, unless in extreme cases. This would qualify.Tylenol relieves some pain but doesn't have the ability to reduce inflammation. Do you have a fever? Keep an eye on that too. Cold bags of fruits and veggies. Heat will expand everything. If the heat helps you, alternate cold to hot. Long periods of heat can assist bacteria to grow. Cold can also help shrink some swelling. But you really need to call (doctor's) office in the morning, UNLESS you have a fever of 101 or higher, then call now. That's the medical side of what I can suggest; but as a friend, I can say that I tried it all, but at this point, stress along with frustration, also plays a big role! You probably won't believe that I'm telling you this but, ask Martin to go get a small can of Carnation Good Start. Feed her a couple ounces and get some sleep. Delaney will sleep longer because it takes longer to digest, and you can take a break. 2-3 Motrin IB's, 2 bags of frozen peas in your bra and a warm bed. Don't feel guilty about formula, she still gets what she needs, and your milk supply is already established. But what about being engorged? Motrin will help and so will the peas. Let me know if there is anything I can do for you. I will even go to the store if you need anything. I have been there and I know how desperate you can get in that situation. Just know that there will be an end to this! It's easily cured and you can enjoy breastfeeding again. Sorry to ramble on. I'm serious, call me if you need anything. I'm still up and dressed.

Heating pads worked great for me! I also had these round things you can put in the freezer or microwave (get them at Target in the nursing aisle) and helped a ton also.
Hope it helps!
------------------------
Are you using any disposable nursing pads? If you are switch to the reusable, washable nursing pads. Gerber sells them in packs of six at Target. I have never used disposables without getting clogged ducts. Other than that, just keep doing what you are doing and if that isn't relieving you at all, go see your Dr!!! I hope this gets better!!! LOVE YOU!!!
------------------------
You are probably already doing this but - just in case you're not: massage while nursing - I keep doing it even though it hurts like heck, hot compresses with massage, Ibuprofen (600mg/g whatever it is) is a big help and necessary - it helps with the inflammation.
I know it can be so horrible and I wish there was some magic answer. If it really isn't getting better - you could ask for a blessing. I know that sounds a little bit silly, but if it is a real concern to you and Delaney then it is of real concern to Lord.
I don't know - good luck!!!

Call the lactation specialist at (the hospital). Talk to the coordinator, ******. Her # is ***-****. Hopefully you are doing better by now though. I am so sorry! This gal has saved me at least 5 times and is a miracle worker, even just over the phone. I promise.
love **, hope you are okay!

And now, since we're on this lovely topic of boobs, one more email from one of my closest and dearest friends. A week ago or so, she and I emailed back and forth about bra shopping. After returning home from her shopping venture, this is her email to me. It's laugh out loud funny. I love you, dear girl.
OK, so the bra shopping was HY-STER-I-CAL!!!!!. Literally, ***** and I couldn't breathe we were laughing so hard. When the lady measured me she thought I was a 36 B or C (That was in me bra). Well it ended up I actually am a DD. Cause by the time you fold up and tuck in the 8 inch vertical hang - that's the size I need in order to get it all in there with no leftover seepage. After trying on at least 30 bras I'm convinced it's not a bra I need but serious surgery. I want em high but any kind of push up just makes them jiggle over the edge. And if I do any kind of proper support they're just low and ENORMOUS. What I need is to cut them off and start fresh. I don't even think they could do anything with these. Anyway, I'll tell you all the things they said when I see you. I'm depressed.
So there ya go. My first and most likely last post on boobs.

27 VERY much appreciated comments:
I'm glad you (and your boobs) feel better! :-) Love you!
I am glad you (all of you) are feeling better. That really is a painful situation. I went through that with Autumn and almost went to formula. It is really hard. Great job and sticking it out. And about the last comment about the bra, I understand that too, I was amazed on what size I was really. I was like a A in high school, who knew what having a baby could do to your body!
I SO GLAD that you found your way through the incredibly painful condition of having a clogged breast duct. I mean, boob duct. AHHHHHH! I'm one of those people who have the hardest time uddering the B*** word. (teehee) I have had breast feeding issues, and would not wish that on anyone. Glad you and Delaney are up and running again!
Oh good lord as if I wasn't already convinced about not having children, you may have just boosted that up a bit. Woah! I had no idea. As for the boob stories I have a good one. My friend had two babies in two years and never had big boobs to begin with. After nursing them both, she confided in me one day that she was getting a boob job (remember we live in bikinis here) When I asked her why she described her boobs as "two ziploc baggies with a little bit of water in them and a piece of gravel in the tip of each one" I almost died laughing!!
Um wow. You go girl! Glad you both are back to normal!
I'm sorry I couldn't have helped you with the breastfeeding issues (and now I'm quite certain I will never be selfless enough to actually do it...yikes) BUT, I've got funny stories to add to the bra shopping. Classic.
you're so great.
I am so glad things are all better and the boobs are back to normal! Love you!!
Me again! Sorry. I was feeling bad that I didn't say I am sorry you were in pain and I am so glad you are feeling better. xoxo
*whew* I'm glad you made it thru. Luckily I've never experienced clogged ducts! I can't imagine the pain!
Girlfriends ROCK! Ahh...the support!
I am so glad that you are still able to breast feed. That's great.
I laughed out loud at your post! I totally know what your friend means by starting new ... as in surgery! HAHA! What did the pioneers ever do about their boob problems when they couldn't talk about them? Thanks for the great tips!
So glad to hear you got some relief finally. That can be SO PAINFUL! Glad you got some good advice from great friends!
Alright... this is in response to the bra shopping email:
If you ever decide to chop them off and start fresh, please have Rachel give you my contact information! I would welcome the donation to my own cause... not enough boobage!
Ah, all of you are lucky who are "just right!"
clogged ducts. Those suck. Glad you worked it out. I have been there... although it has been a long time.
On a side note, I have read some of your archives and didn't realize that your baby was 12lbs. 3 oz. at birth and you didn't tear, or have to have her via c-section!
You are incredible! That is amazing, and I would have to say that your body was probably meant to have babies! he he.
I am glad your boobies are feeling better.(I bet Martin is too!!!!)LOL
I had that happen with Taylor. I took as hot of a bath as I could stand and put raw cabbage on my boobs. It actually really helped believe it or not. That is very painful, I am sorry you are going through that. Love you!
I forgot to tell you, don't beat yourself up over it. It happens to all of us at one point or another.
So sorry to hear you were sick. Glad everything is back to normal and in good working order :)
Loved the boobie drano! So perfect!
Glad to hear the girls are feeling better.
Oh, and I wanted to add that the lactation nurse specialist at Sacred Heart happens to be one of my harp students. So hey, if you need her home phone number next time this happens, let me know. I can hook you up. Just don't fess up to who gave you her phone number. he he
HA, HA, HA, HEE, HEE, HEE! Definately laughing out loud on the shopping trip! And, all the advice you got on the clogs is what I would have said to you...and you did great to make it through that! It's another sign of how tough you really are, Lady!
Flash back central for me. Thank God for a loving husband who would get up with us at every feeding, put hot packs on my boobs and massage them to get the milk going and loosen everything up. What long and painful days and nights we had for a few days. 32 weeks later we're still going strong! Glad you're feeling better!
On the email that said "Motrin" will help, I kept reading it to say "Martin will help" and I couldn't quite figure out (and didn't want to imagine) how Martin would help with your boob issue. Then I looked closer, and was so relieved it said "Motrin"! Ahh! Glad you're feeling better.
I'm am glad you are better and was able to stick with it. Sounds like you had some really good advice. Way to go.
So my then 4 year old has a bra story. We were at target and he said, " look mommy green boobs" I looked and sure enough there was an entire rack of padded green bra's. :) Something to smile about
Nursing issues are the worst! I'm sorry you had to suffer through that and am glad you are feeling better. You got a lot of good advice and support! It was fun to read through them :) I found that applying a heat pad (the kind you can heat up in the microwave), as hot as you can stand always helped me. But then I was a little suprised to read that heat can cause bacteria to grow, eewww! I never had a problem with that but I can see how that could happen! The ibuprofen idea was a good one- I'll have to remember all this for my next child. Anyhow, I hope it all goes good from here on out!
I'm so glad you're not afraid to say the word BOOBS! Totally cracked me up:0). Awesome advice from very funny and intelligent friends. You are one lucky girl.
Clogged ducts... they suck! Mastitis... had it!
Breast feeding... a priceless and PAINFUL experience
